KATHMANDU: The Madhesh Province Assembly has passed a motion removing Speaker Ram Chandra Mandal from his position on grounds of conduct unbecoming of his office.
During a vote on the motion in the meeting of the assembly on Wednesday, 76 of the 78 members present supported the motion. No assembly member voted against the motion, according to Deputy Speaker Babita Kumari Raut Ishar.
As per Article 182 (6)(C) of the Constitution of Nepal, 2015, the office of the Speaker becomes vacant if a resolution is passed by a majority of two-thirds of the total number of the then members of the province assembly to the effect that his or her conduct is not compatible with his or her office.
Mandal’s party, the CPN-UML, boycotted the session.
Sixty-four members of the seven-party alliance of opposition parties had registered the motion on November 13. Opposition parties had earlier accused Speaker Mandal of failing to remain neutral during the November 8 session convened to debate the vote of confidence for then Chief Minister Jitendra Sonal.
