KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that there is a need to strengthen the democratic republican system by serving the people with a pure heart and a firm resolve for good governance.
In his special address to the Madhesh Province Assembly on Tuesday, Oli stated that the first right of the people is freedom from poverty, and that other rights hold no meaning in the face of poverty. He called for collective efforts to advance on the path of development and prosperity.
“The federal democratic republican system is a great achievement. This achievement should not be seen merely as a political milestone but as an outcome of the people’s struggle,” Oli said. “Our efforts, therefore, must be dedicated to serving the people.”
Oli said it is natural for people to expect a change in their livelihoods, their well-being and the welfare of their children. “Hence, we must ensure that people can exercise their democratic rights. Democracy must flourish in all aspects of social life, and for that, society must be driven toward development and good governance,” he added.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the social, cultural unity, tolerance and harmony of Madhesh Province as its most beautiful aspects. He praised the disciplined, conscious, and development-loving citizens of the province for their contributions to preserving Nepal’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, national unity, autonomy and pride.
Oli added that the provincial government has a special role in enhancing coordination between the federal, provincial and local governments, as well as in policy-making and development initiatives.
He added that the Sunkoshi-Marin Diversion Project would irrigate farmlands in Madhesh Province thereby boosting national production and productivity while fostering a sense of unity between the hills and the Tarai.
Prime Minister Oli stated that industrial zones, petroleum pipelines, railways, postal roads, expressways, and the Ramraja Prasad Singh Hospital are the foundations of Madhesh’s development and prosperity. He suggested that the integrated checkpoint and major customs hub at Birgunj could be developed as an economic center, while the ancient city of Janakpurdham could be promoted as a base for cultural tourism.
