Madhesh CM Yadav to face floor test on Wednesday

JANAKPURDHAM: Madhesh Province Chief Minister Saroj Yadav has announced that he will seek a vote of confidence in the provincial assembly at 2 pm on Wednesday.

Speaking at a press conference in Janakpurdham on Tuesday, Yadav said he received a copy of the court’s order, directing him to take a floor test within 24 hours, at 3 pm on Tuesday. “I have already notified the Madhesh Provincial Assembly Secretariat to convene a meeting on Wednesday to decide on my vote of confidence motion,” Yadav said.

He expressed confidence that he would secure the trust vote.

“The Supreme Court has upheld my appointment under Article 168(3), but it has ordered me to take a vote of confidence within 24 hours instead of within 30 days as stipulated in the constitution, which I find questionable. Nevertheless, I will take the floor test,” Yadav said.

Yadav was appointed Chief Minister as per Article 168(3) of the Constitution of Nepal, 2015. The seven-party opposition alliance challenged the decision to appoint Yadav as Chief Minister under 168(3) at the Supreme Court.

Hearing the petition, the Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the Chief Minister to secure a vote of confidence within 24 hours. Issuing a mandamus order, the bench directed the defendants to initiate the process of forming a government under Article 168(2) if Yadav failed the floor test.
