KATHMANDU: Madhesh Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh, who has fallen into a minority, has decided to undergo a floor test.
Chief Minister Singh notified the Madhesh Province Assembly Secretariat on Friday of his intention to seek a vote of confidence on October 14. “In accordance with Article 188 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal, I kindly request you to make arrangements for the vote of confidence on October 14,” a letter sent by Singh to the Province Assembly Secretariat reads.
Singh’s government fell into a minority after his coalition partners, the CPN-UML and the Nepali Congress (NC), withdrew their support. Singh’s own party, the Janamat Party, has also withdrawn its support. Despite this, Singh has chosen to undergo a floor test instead of stepping down.
The NC, UML, and Janamat Party have already submitted their claim to form a new government in the province under the leadership of Krishna Prasad Yadav of the NC.
Parties require the support of 54 members to form a government in the 107-member Province Assembly. Together, these three parties have 57 members — three more than the required majority.
The UML is the largest party in the Madhesh Province Assembly with 25 seats, including the Speaker and one suspended member, while the NC has 22 and the Janamat Party has 13 members.
Similarly, the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP) Nepal has nine members, including one suspended, the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal has 19, the CPN (Maoist Centre) has nine, the CPN (Unified Socialist) has seven, and the Nagarik Unmukti Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party and Sanghiya Samajbadi Party have one member each.
