Madhesh Chief Minister Singh removes eight state ministers

KATHMANDU: Madhesh Province Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh, who had drawn criticism for forming an oversized cabinet, has dismissed all state ministers from his government.

Singh announced the removal of eight state ministers from his cabinet on Tuesday. A cabinet source told Himal Press that the decision to remove the state ministers was made with the consensus of all coalition partners.

The Janamat Party leader had appointed three state ministers from CPN-UML, two each from Nepali Congress and Janamat Party, and one from Loktantrik Samajwadi Party. The decision means Rekha Thakur, Nilam Kumari Rajak, Rambabu Yadav, Shambhu Sah, Mohammad Zaid Alam, Keshav Rai, Sharada Devi Thapa and Ranju Kumari Mandal Khang have been relieved of their positions in the province cabinet.

The formation of the large cabinet had also caused a rift between Singh and his party. Janamat Party, a few days ago, sought clarification from Singh for not consulting the party while picking ministers and state ministers.

Sources within the Janamat Party say that top leaders of the party had even begun discussions about finding Singh’s alternative as Chief Minister.

Singh, who leads a coalition government of NC, UML, and other fringe parties, had formed a 20-member cabinet to appease all coalition partners.

The Madhesh cabinet now has 12 members.
