KATHMANDU: Lumpy skin disease claimed the lives of around 4,000 cattle in 24 hours.
According to the Livestock Services Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, the total death toll due to lumpy skin disease reached 25,408 as of Wednesday – 3,935 more compared to Tuesday.
The first case of lumpy skin disease was detected in the country in March.
Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development Beduram Bhusal said in the meeting of the House of Representatives on Tuesday that lumpy disease had claimed 21,473 cattle so far.
Lumpy skin disease has been detected in 76 out of 77 districts of the country. The disease has affected the hilly and mid-hills regions the most, according to the ministry.
Issuing a statement, the Department said livestock technicians have been deployed at the local level to control the spread of the disease.
According to the ministry, 682,080 cattle have contracted lumpy skin disease. Of them, 409,175 have fully recovered.
