KATHMANDU: Chief Minister of Lumbini Province, Lila Giri, has failed the floor test.
Giri received 33 votes in his vote of confidence proposal, as 53 assembly members voted against him. He received the support of 29 assembly members of CPN-UML and four members of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP).
Giri, the parliamentary party leader of CPN-UML, went for the floor test after CPN (Maoist Center) and other fringe parties withdrew support from his government.
With this, UML-led governments in three provinces have fallen after a new coalition of Maoist Center and Nepali Congress was formed at the center. Earlier, UML-led governments in Sudurapshchim and Gandaki provinces fell after Maoist Center withdrew its support.
This means UML, which was leading four province governments until about a month ago, currently leads only one i.e. Koshi Province.
Chaudhary to become next CM
Dilliram Chaudhary of Nepali Congress (NC) is expected to become the new chief minister of Lumbini.
Earlier, 53 assembly members from NC, Maoist Center, Nagarik Unmukti Party, Janamat Party, Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP), and Rastriya Janamorcha submitted a letter to Province Chief Amik Sherchan requesting him to appoint NC’s Chaudhary as the new chief minister as per Article 168 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal.
The support of at least 44 assembly members is needed to form government in the 87-member Lumbini Province Assembly.
UML is the largest party in the province assembly with 29 members, followed by NC (27), Maoist Center (11), Rastriya Prajatantra Party (4), Nagarik Unmukti (4), Janamat Party (3), JSP (3), Unified Socialist (1), Rastriya Janamorcha (1), and one independent assembly member.
