KATHMANDU: Loktantrik Samajwadi Party (LSP) Nepal appears poised to withdraw from the ruling coalition, as party Chairperson Mahantha Thakur has directed their sole cabinet minister, Sharat Singh Bhandari, to prepare for resignation.
Thakur issued the directive stating the government is facing a moral crisis after issuing six ordinances a week before the parliamentary session.
Minister for Labor, Employment and Social Security, Sharat Singh Bhandari, is currently in the UAE.
Out of six ordinances, LSP Nepal has decided not to support the passage of land-related ordinance.
Addressing a meeting of party workers in Sarlahi on Thursday, Thakur said the government is facing a moral crisis because the possibility of passing a land-related ordinance by parliament is low.
Thakur added that the ordinances have created a moral crisis for not only the government but also his party. “It is a moral crisis for the party to reject the decisions taken by the government while still in the government,” he added. “That is why I have told our minister in the government to complete all pending works within a day or two.”
The LSP Nepal Chairperson also said that the government did not consult with the party while introducing the ordinances.
JSP Nepal, which also supports the government, has also said that it would reject the land-related ordinance.
With two parties deciding to reject the ordinance, the chances of the ordinance being passed by the National Assembly have become slim.
JSP Nepal has three members in the National Assembly, while LSP Nepal has one.
The government, however, enjoys a comfortable majority in the House of Representatives.
