KATHMANDU: Minister for Home Affairs Ramesh Lekhak is addressing the House of Representatives on Thursday regarding the recent arrest of the Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP) Patron Resham Chaudhary.

The announcement came after lawmakers from the NUP and Janamat Party disrupted House proceedings on Tuesday, demanding the government’s explanation on Chaudhary’s arrest. In response, Speaker Devraj Ghimire informed the House that the Home Minister will brief lawmakers on the matter on Thursday.

As the protest of the lawmakers continued, Home Minister Lekhak verbally communicated to the Federal Parliament Secretariat of his commitment to address the matter on Thursday.

Chaudhary was arrested on April 30 at the Nepal Academy Hall, just before the announcement of unification between the NUP and the Janamat Party. The arrest was based on a letter issued by Mahiman Singh Bista, a section officer from the Supreme Court’s writ section. The Supreme Court later clarified that the letter was unauthorized and issued a corrective notice to Dillibazar Prison. Chaudhary was subsequently released after five hours in detention.

The incident disrupted the planned unification between the two parties.
