Left unity not possible in Nepal: Bhandari

KATHMANDU: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has said that the prospect of left-wing unity in Nepal appears unlikely.

Speaking to reporters at Biratnagar Airport on Monday, Bhandari expressed doubt over the possibility of a strong left alliance in the country.

Responding to a question about left unity, she said, “There are so many leftist parties in Nepal. I can’t say there’s no possibility at all, but I don’t see a strong one.”

Although CPN-UML has decided not to renew her party membership, Bhandari said she is affiliated with UML. “I am still a member of the UML, and I will remain in the UML,” she added.

Bhandari, who gave up her party membership when she was elected President of the country in 2015, is trying to return to active politics. She has opened a liaison office in New Baneshwar, Kathmandu, to meet party leaders and cadres.
