KATHMANDU: Lawmakers have demanded an investigation and action against those involved in a visit visa scandal and a bribery scandal implicating a minister.
As soon as Speaker Devraj Ghimire commenced Tuesday’s session of the House of Representatives, lawmakers from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) stood to protest. Speaker Ghimire then allowed RSP lawmaker Shiva Nepali to speak.
Nepali called for an investigation into human trafficking facilitated through the Department of Immigration. He demanded that the government implement the recommendations of a task force led by then-Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand in 2021.
Similarly, RPP lawmaker Gyan Bahadur Shahi said that the visit visa issue would not be resolved unless the minister involved in the controversy resigned. He also urged the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) to initiate legal proceedings against Raj Kumar Gupta, who resigned as Minister for Federal Affairs and General Administration on Tuesday after the bribery scandal allegedly implicating him surfaced.
Also speaking at the meeting, CPN-UML lawmaker Sunita Baral objected to criticisms aimed at the Prime Minister and demanded that such statements be expunged from the parliamentary record.
Speaker Ghimire informed the House that he had noted the issues raised by the lawmakers.
