KATHMANDU: Parliamentarians have urged the government to declare a special situation and take urgent measures to minimize the increasing road accidents in the country.
Speaking in the meeting of the National Assembly on Wednesday, Bimala Ghimire drew the government’s attention to rising cases of road accidents over the years. She also demanded that the government provide free medical treatment to people injured in road accidents. “The increasing number of accidents shows how risky our roads are. Accidents are rising due to factors like poor road conditions, reckless driving, old vehicles and heavy traffic,” she said, urging the government to conduct vehicle health checks, improve roads and provide necessary training to drivers and helpers.
Another National Assembly member Jayanti Rai urged the government to bring a special plan to mitigate road accidents. Likewise, Krishna Bahadur Rokaya also called for urgent steps to reduce road fatalities, while Maya Prasad Sharma called on the government to ensure safe road transportation by upgrading roads.
