Lawmaker Sunil Sharma had been absconding since 2016!

KATHMANDU: It has been revealed that Nepali Congress lawmaker Sunil Sharma, who was arrested from Kathmandu earlier on Thursday, had been listed as ‘absconding’ by Nepal Police seven years ago.

The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police launched ‘Operation Quack’ in 2016 to identify and apprehend individuals with counterfeit medical credentials. During the operation led by then DIG Navaraj Silwal, CIB had concluded that Sharma’s +2 certificate was falsified. The police arrested 26 quacks at that time. However, the investigation into Sharma’s case was halted after Silwal’s retirement.

Sharma obtained his MBBS degree from India. CIB sources say that even his MBBS certificate is fake.

“This is an unresolved case from the past. We have arrested him in connection with this investigation. It seems that he manipulated his Class 12 mark sheet after failing the examination,” the source added.

Sharma had been previously arrested on July 9, 2016, yet he managed to ‘escape’ and fled to Japan before the police could publicize his arrest. Eventually, he returned to Nepal but had since evaded arrest.
