Lawmaker Rai arrested from her residence in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Maya Rai, who had been absconding after a complaint was registered against her for embezzlement of cooperative funds, was arrested on Saturday night.

The Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office arrested Rai, who is also a Central Working Committee member of the NC, from her residence in Kapan, Kathmandu.

Rai was elected to the House of Representatives under the proportional representation system from the indigenous people category.

Police are investigating her for embezzling deposits from Swarnalaxmi Savings and Credit Cooperative, Kalimati. She had been absconding after the Kathmandu District Court issued an arrest warrant for her in connection with cooperative fraud and organized crime charges.

She was a board director of the cooperative.

A case has been filed against 39 individuals, including Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Ravi Lamichhane, for misappropriating funds from the cooperative. Lamichhane has been released on bail of Rs 6 million.
