KATHMANDU: The Maitighar-New Baneshwar stretch in central Kathmandu has been placed under tight security surveillance, considering the boiling tension between two rival groups. A large number of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel have been deployed across the area.
The heightened security comes after the Gen Z group recently filed a complaint with police against former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.
In response, the student wing of the CPN-UML, the All Nepal National Free Students’ Union (ANNFSU), filed a counter-complaint against Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah and Gen Z leader Sudan Gurung for arson and vandalism during the Gen Z protest.
According to police, the complaint lodged by the Gen Z group has already been forwarded to the judicial inquiry commission formed to probe the incidents of September 8 and 9. Police are preparing to sent the complaints against Balen and Gurung to the same commission as well.
Security concerns intensified after attempts were made to remove banners put up by one group and replace them with new ones from the opposing side in the Maitighar area.
Following these incidents, the police administration has maintained a state of high alert and strengthened security arrangements throughout the Maitighar–New Baneshwar stretch.
