Lamichhane remanded into custody for six days

POKHARA: Kaski District Court has granted permission to police to keep Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and former Deputy Prime Minister Rabi Lamichhane in custody for six days.

A single bench of District Judge Navaraj Dahal authorized the District Police Office, Kaski, to keep Lamichhane in custody for three more days.

Police arrested Lamichhane from the RSP Party Office in Kathmandu on Friday evening and took him to Pokhara for an investigation into the misappropriation of cooperative deposits. He was presented to the court on Sunday as Saturday was a public holiday. Police are preparing to charge him on cooperative fraud and organized crime offenses.

During Sunday’s hearing, District Attorney Kamala Kafle, Assistant Attorney Shantidevi Sharma and Bed Bahadur Bista, the legal counsel of cooperative victims, sought a six-day custody for Lamichhane. On the other hand, Senior Advocates Sushil Panta and Narayan Ghimire represented Lamichhane.

He has been accused of misappropriating funds from various cooperatives, including Suryadarshan Cooperative of Pokhara, during his tenure as Managing Director of Gorkhapatra Media Network Pvt. Lamichhane has denied his involvement in bringing funds from the cooperative to the media company. He, however, has said that he would take responsibility for the funds spent by the media company during his tenure.
