Lamichhane among 39 charged in Swarnalaxmi Cooperative fraud case

KATHMANDU: The District Government Attorney’s Office (DGAO), Kathmandu, has registered a charge sheet against 39 individuals, including former Home Minister and Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane, at the Kathmandu District Court for misusing savings of Kalimati-based Swarnalaxmi Multipurpose Cooperative.

The DGAO registered the charge sheet based on an investigation report that it received from the District Police Range, Kathmandu, on Thursday. Police had recommended registering cases against 44 individuals and seeking compensation of Rs 1.19 billion from them. However, the DGAO filed cooperative fraud and organized crime charges against only 39.

Four of the defendants, including Lamichhane, former DIG of Nepal Police Chhabi Lal Joshi, and Kumar Ramtel, are in the custody of Kaski police. All three were associated with Gorkha Media Network, the media company where the funds from Swarnalaxmi were transferred. While in the custody of Kaski police, they were brought to Kathmandu for questioning.

Gorkha Media Network Chairperson GB Rai, who is on the run, is among the defendants.
