KATHMANDU: Laalimaa, which tells the story of a woman forced into prostitution, is releasing in theaters across the country on Friday.
According to producers, the film has received around 60 shows on its opening day.
Written and directed by Roshan Miraj, the film is based on the struggles, pain, and psychological realities faced by women forced into prostitution. The film tells the story of a young woman named Laalima, who fights to free her mute mother after she is sent to prison following an unexpected incident.
Actor and model Roshani Karki plays the lead role in the movie, portraying a sex worker. To prepare for the role and closely understand the plight of sex workers, she had met and discussed with real sex workers before the film went into production. The film also features actors like Jeevan Bhattarai, Usha Rajak, Shishir Wangdel, Sushma Niraula, Ghanashyam Joshi, and Sabin Kattel.
Produced under the banner of Faith Aastha, the film highlights the social stigma, hardship, and emotional trauma faced by women in the sex trade.
