KATHMANDU: Krishna Gopal Shrestha of CPN-UML has been reelected to the House of Representatives from the Katmandu-9 constituency.

Shrestha, who received 11,956 votes, defeated his closest contender Tek Bahadur Pokharel of Rastriya Swatantra Pandey. Pandey received 10,961 votes.

Kalpana Dhamal of CPN (Maoist Center) – the common candidate of the ruling coalition – in the constituency received 6,402 votes.

This will be Shrestha’s fourth term in the House of Representatives. He won the 1992 re-election from the Kathmandu-5 constituency in the seat vacated by party general secretary late Madan Bhandari. He won again in 1994 from the Kathmandu-7 constituency.

Shrestha lost three consecutive elections – in 1999 (from Kathmandu-7), 2008 and 2013 – from Kathmandu-9, but won the 2017 election when he was the common candidate of the left parties.
