KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah has resigned to contest the House of Representatives elections scheduled for March 5.
Surendra Bajgain, a member of Balen’s secretariat, confirmed to Himal Press that Shah submitted his resignation on Sunday afternoon.
In a letter addressed to Deputy Mayor Suntia Dangol, Balen said he was voluntarily stepping down with immediate effect.
Balen is contesting the upcoming elections from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). The party has already decided to nominate him as its Senior Leader. Balen will be the party’s prime ministerial candiates in the election.
Party sources say Balen is preparing to contest from the Jhapa-5 constituency against CPN-UML chairperson KP Sharma Oli.
