KATHMANDU: Karnali Chief Minister Yamlal Kandel has secured a vote of confidence from the Karnali Province Assembly.
In the voting held on Thursday, 23 members voted in favor of the vote of confidence motion tabled by Kandel, while 12 voted against it. Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), which holds one seat in the provincial assembly, remained neutral.
Kandel was appointed Chief Minister of Karnali on April 9 as per Article 168 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal, 2015. However, it took the CPN-UML leader more than two weeks to forge a consensus on power-sharing among coalition partners, which delayed the floor test. He has the support of province assembly members from CPN (Maoist Center) and CPN (Unified Socialist) along with UML.
Nepali Congress (NC) is the largest party in the 40-member Karnali Province Assembly with 15 members, followed by the Maoist Center with 13, the UML with 10 (including the Speaker), and one each from the RPP and CPN (Unified Socialist).
NC’s parliamentary party leader in the province, Jeevan Bahadur Shahi, remains suspended after a corruption case was filed against him in the Supreme Court.
