Judicial inquiry commission’s report will not be acceptable to us: Oli

KATHMANDU:  CPN-UML Chair and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that the report prepared by the judicial inquiry commission led by former Judge Gauri Bahadur Karki, formed to investigate the incidents of September 8 and 9, is unacceptable to him and his party.

“They first formed a commission with people who already believed that ‘KP Oli should be arrested and jailed’, conducted an investigation as a show, and now want to act out another drama by moving forward on the basis of that report,” Oli said. “Such dramas are not acceptable to the CPN-UML.”

Oli criticized Karki for his earlier social media remarks during the Gen Z uprising, questioning his impartiality. “This fake commission is not acceptable to the UML,” he said. “When questions about his impartiality had already been raised before he joined the commission, shouldn’t he have resigned on moral grounds? Can someone who is openly against us be truly neutral?”

Speaking at a program in Bhaktapur on Thursday, Oli also alleged that the government led by Sushila Karki was formed forcefully.

During the Gen Z protests of September 8, which erupted against restrictions on social media and rampant corruption, the then Oli-led government was accused of using excessive force, resulting in the deaths of 19 youths. In the following day’s violent demonstrations, major government institutions, including Singha Durbar, the Parliament building and the Supreme Court, along with several police stations and government offices across the country, were torched and reduced to ashes.

Altogether, 74 people were killed during the unrest, and property worth billions of rupees was destroyed. While Gen Z activists have been demanding the arrest of Oli and the then Home Minister, accusing them of direct involvement in the incident, Oli said he would not flee out of fear of Karki.

Despite widespread criticism that his stubbornness and arrogance had caused the devastating losses, Oli appeared undeterred, responding in his trademark tone. He expressed strong objection to his passport being withheld and to restrictions preventing him from leaving the Kathmandu Valley.

Warning Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal not to act recklessly, he said, “They have blocked my passport? They say I can’t leave the Valley? Does KP Oli flee out of fear of Sushila Karki?”

“I don’t really know the current Home Minister,” Oli continued, “but I would advise him not to be too excitable or impulsive. Running a government and leading a nation is not a matter of jest.”

Oli also warned his opponents not to provoke the CPN-UML, saying that threats of arrest would not intimidate him or his party.
