JSP Nepal decides to support five of the six ordinances

KATHMANDU: Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) Nepal has decided to support the passage of five of the six ordinances issued by the government.

A meeting of the JSP Nepal’s parliamentary party held on Tuesday decided to support five ordinances, but reject the land-related ordinance.

The cabinet passed the six ordinances – Ordinance to Amend Some Nepal Acts Related to Good Governance Promotion and Public Service Delivery, Economic Procedures and Financial Responsibility (First Amendment) Ordinance, the Privatization (First Amendment) Ordinance, and the Ordinance to Amend Some Nepal Acts Related to Economic and Business Environment Improvement and Investment Promotion, Ordinance to Amend Some Nepal Acts Related to Cooperatives, and the Ordinance to Amend Some Nepal Acts Related to Land – in the second week of January. As per the constitution, the ordinances must be approved within 60 days of the beginning of the House session.

However, the government has been unable to include the ordinances in the parliamentary agenda due to a lack of majority in the National Assembly. The ruling coalition, which is one vote short of a majority in the upper house, had been relying on JSP Nepal’s support to pass the ordinances. The ruling coalition, however, has a comfortable majority in the House of Representatives.

JSP Nepal has three lawmakers in the National Assembly.

The party had formed a task force under Vice Chairperson Raj Kishor Yadav to study the ordinances. The parliamentary party’s decision was based on the task force’s report, according to JSP Nepal leaders.

“The land-related ordinance contains provisions that could harm forest areas and public land, which is why we decided against supporting it,” a JSP Nepal lawmaker said.
