Joint expedition of Indian, Nepal armies attempting Kanchanjunga

KATHMANDU: A joint expedition of Nepali and Indian military is set to attempt an ascent on Mt Kanchanjunga, the third highest mountain in the world, this spring.

India’s Minister for Defence, Rajnath Singh, flagged off the expedition amid a ceremony at the defence ministry premises in New Delhi on Thursday. Major General of Nepal Army, Dhruba Prakash Shah, also participated in the flag-off ceremony.

The joint expedition to Kanchanjunga will be led by Colonel Sarfaraz Singh of the Indian Army and will have 12 Indian Army soldiers and six Nepal Army soldiers.

Likewise, 35 Indian Army climbers and 10 NCC cadets are attempting Mt Everest this spring.

Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan and Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi of India, and Nepali Ambassador to India, Dr Shankar P Sharma, were also present on the occasion.
