Janardan Sharma calls for leadership change in Maoist Center

KATHMANDU: CPN (Maoist Center) leaders, who were expected to focus on strengthening the party organization after quitting the government, are involved in a series of accusations and counter-accusations. Party Deputy General Secretary Janardan Sharma has gone to the extent of saying that the party should select new leadership.

Speaking in the Standing Committee meeting held in Kathmandu on Sunday, party leaders criticized the leadership.  Deputy General Secretary Janardan Sharma presented a written disagreement against party Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal. Sharma said the leadership accused him of planning to join UML and attempting to destroy the party organization. He said in his written disagreement that Chairperson Dahal has been continuously attacking him. “When leadership itself says Janardan Sharma is bent on splitting the party, fear of a split has spread among party cadres and the public. Hundreds of party cadres have been asking me over the phone if the party is splitting,” Sharma said.

Dahal had suggested in various speeches that the party might split. Sharma has alleged that Dahal often mentioned his name.

Sharma questioned the motive of the top leadership. “Rather than answering questions of party leaders and cadres, the leadership has been diverting attention by creating issues that agitate party cadres,” Sharma said. He

Sharma has presented a 14-page written proposal for discussion in the Standing Committee. He also accused Dahal of ending the significance of the general convention by announcing a special convention even before the general convention had concluded.

The Maoist Center Deputy General Secretary proposed a handover of the party leadership, stating that the party should send Dahal for parliamentary leadership and seek his alternatives for party leadership. He said the party should select new leadership through direct election.

Roadmap for party rebuilding

Sharma has proposed a 16-point strategy for party rebuilding. He said there is a need to define the socialism-oriented economy as envisioned by the constitution, develop a clear stance on the neoliberal economy adopted by the state for over four decades, and prepare strategies for radical reforms such as a progressive tax system, land reform and management, poverty eradication, industrialization, international trade, employment-oriented infrastructure development, and people-oriented education and health strategies.
