Itahari submetropolis demolishes homes for six-lane road

ITAHARI: Itahari Sub-metropolitan City has started removing structures along the right-of-way of the under-construction six-lane road. The road from Itahari’s main market area in Chaurasta to Tarahara has already been completed, but the construction of the road south of Chaurasta has been impacted because some property owners along the right-of-way have not yet vacated their homes.

Recently, the sub-metropolis dismantled 14 houses in Itahari-9 and has started bringing down houses in Ward-6 as of Sunday. The local government had given the owners of 34 houses along the right-of-way in Ward-6 until Saturday to demolish their own homes, but since many of them did not comply, Mayor Hemkarna Poudel took the initiative himself.

“We will fall behind in our development if a few people oppose this effort. We still need to expand about 300 meters of road south of Chaurasta to the bus park in the Biratnagar line,” Poudel said. “We are taking down homes that have been built by encroaching on the highway and public land.”

According to the Six-Lane Road Expansion Project Office, the road north of Chaurasta to the army office is nearly cleared for a 20-meter expansion, but some houses will have to be demolished to make room for a footpath. The project deadline has been extended until 2023, and the office is hopeful that the project will be completed within this time frame.

The project was started in 2012/13 with a seven-year target completion date, but has received multiple time extensions.
