Journalist and writer Mohan Mainali’s book, ‘Mukam Ranmaidan’, has won the prestigious Madan Puraskar for 2023. The decision was announced during the general convention of the Madan Puraskar Guthi on Friday. Mainali, known for works like Upallo Thalo, Nadekheko Desh, Mantha Deraeyeko Jug and Aakashmukhi is also an acclaimed documentary filmmaker. His documentary Jogimara ka Jyuindaharu is particularly well-known. Santosh Adhikari of Himal Press spoke to Mainali after the winner of the awarded was declared on Friday.

Your book was shortlisted among five others for the award. How did you feel at that time?

When my book hit the market, I was filled with uncertainty—wondering how it would be received by readers. I felt I had done a good job. When I learned that my book was shortlisted for the prestigious award, I was very happy for a moment. But then I reminded myself not to get too carried away. I believed all five books on the shortlist were equally deserving. I did not allow myself to get my hopes too high. I knew that keeping my expectations low would help avoid disappointment later.

You have won the award. How is the feeling?

I was excited when my book made it to the final five, but I wasn’t expecting to win. Now that Mukam Ranmaidan has been declared the winner, I am incredibly happy. I put in a lot of hard work, and it feels like it all has paid off. All the struggles, the exhaustion and the challenges I faced while working on the book have faded away. I feel like I have been energized with a renewed sense of purpose.

What is the book about?

The book delves into various aspects of the Anglo-Nepal War. It answers questions like how the soldiers fought and what hardships they endured. I have also detailed how those who fought in the war described their experiences. The book provides insights into the personal stories and the broader historical context of the conflict.

How long did it take to complete the book?

I began working on the book in 2021, and it was completed in 2023. Since the book deals with historical events, it took considerable time to research and verify facts. Bringing to light previously unknown aspects of the Nepal-British War wasn’t an easy task.

What inspired you to write this book?

I felt compelled to write it because it is a topic that piques everyone’s interest but is not easily accessible. It is an issue that is often talked about but not well-documented. I felt I could create a valuable document by collecting and presenting the stories of those who fought in the war. That belief drove me to research and write the book.
