Former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak
KATHMANDU: The judicial inquiry commission formed to investigate the incidents of September 8 and 9 has summoned then-Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak to record his statement.
The commission sent him a letter on Tuesday calling him to appear for questioning on Friday, according to a member of the commission.
The commission also plans to summon then-Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to record his statement.
Oli, however, has said that he won’t record his statement. He has also challenged the commission to arrest him if it may.
The protests resulted in 77 deaths-20 on September 8, 37 on September 9, and 20 in the days following the protests. Another 429, including 17 children under 13, were injured. Total physical losses caused by the protests are estimated at Rs 84.45 billion.
The government formed the three-member commission on September 21 under the chairmanship of former Judge Gauri Bahadur Karki. Former AIG of the Nepal Police, Bigyan Raj Sharma, and legal expert Bishweshwar Prasad Bhandari are the other members of the commission.
Although the commission had been given three months to complete its work and submit its report, it recently requested the government to extend its term.
