POKHARA: Prof Dr Indra Prasad Tiwari has been appointed as the Chancellor of Gandaki University.

Tiwari is the second chancellor of the university under the Gandaki Province Government. The post had been lying vacant since Prof Dr Ganesh Man Gurung completed his term on February 16.

The provincial government had formed a three-member selection committee under Prof Dr Kailash Nath Pyakurel to recommend Gurung’s successor. Out of seven applicants, the committee had shortlisted three candidates – Prof Dr Tiwari, Prof Dr Bishwa Kalyan Parajuli and Prof Dr Saroj Koirala.

Tiwari is considered close to the Nepali Congress, while the other two are said to align with the CPN-UML.

Gandaki Chief Minister Surendra Raj Pandey, who is from the Nepali Congress, appointed Twari to the position on Friday.

A resident of Mustang Chowk in Pokhara, Prof Tiwari is the former Dean of the School of Social Sciences at Pokhara University.

Gandaki University has built both temporary and permanent infrastructures at Gyankunj in Ward No. 32, with land allocated by the Government of Nepal.

The university got official recognition after the Gandaki Province Assembly passed the Gandaki University Act in October 2019.

Unlike most other universities in Nepal, where the Prime Minister or Chief Minister serves as Chancellor, Gandaki University follows a governance model led by a dedicated Academic Council, which oversees the appointment of the Chancellor.

The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in sports management, information technology, pharmacy, business administration and artificial intelligence.
