Indra Bahadur Baniya appointed Chief Minister of Bagmati

KATHMANDU: Indra Bahadur Baniya of Nepali Congress (NC) has been appointed as the Chief Minister of Bagmati Province.

Bagmati Province Chief, Deepak Prasad Devkota, appointed Baniya as the sixth chief minister of the province on Tuesday.

“Province Chief Deepak Prasad Devkota has appointed Bagmati Province Assembly Member Indra Bahadur Baniya as the Chief Minister on Tuesday as per Article 168 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal, 2015,” reads a statement issued by the Office of the Province Chief.

Baniya had staked his claim to form a government in the province with the support of 64 members in the 110-member Bagmati Province Assembly on Monday.

Earlier, Baniya was elected as the parliamentary leader of Nepali Congress in the Bagmati Province Assembly. He defeated Bahadur Singh Lama by eight votes.

Following the defeat in the parliamentary party election, Lama had stepped down as the Chief Minister of the province on Sunday.
