KATHMANDU: The Delhi High Court is hearing a petition filed by an Indian national, seeking compensation for his wife’s demise in Kathmandu during the Gen Z protest of September 8 and 9, on February 26.
Rambir Singh Gola has sought compensation of 250 million Indian rupees (INR) from the Indian government and INR 750 million from Hyatt Hotels.
Rambir’s wife, Rajesh Gola, died while coming down from her room in Hatty Regency Kathmandu using a makeshift rope after the hotel was set on fire by the protesters on September 9.
The couple was staying in the hotel during their pilgrimage to Nepal.
“In spite of repeated distress calls and foreseeable danger, there was no evacuation or consular intervention by the Indian Embassy or the Ministry of External Affairs. The authorities abdicated their constitutional duty and left us orphaned in a foreign land,” Rambir has said in his petition.
The Gen Z protest claimed 76 lives and caused damage worth billions of rupees on public and private property in Kathmandu and different parts of the country.
