KATHMANDU: Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has arrived in Kathmandu. He landed at Tribhuvan International Airport on Sunday morning aboard an Indian Air Force aircraft.
Misri is in Nepal for a two-day visit. During his stay, he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Oli and deliver an official invitation letter on behalf of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a state visit to India.
The Indian Foreign Secretary is also expected to hold meetings with President Ramchandra Paudel, Foreign Minister Dr. Narayan Kaji Shrestha, and Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai.
He is returning to India on Monday.

In line with India’s “Neighborhood First” policy, Nepal and India have maintained frequent high-level exchanges. Since May 2014, when Modi assumed office, there have been 17 meetings between the heads of state or government of the two countries. Modi himself has visited Nepal five times during this period. Nepali prime ministers have visited India ten times since 2014.
At the ministerial level, the Nepal-India Joint Commission, co-chaired by the foreign ministers of both countries, has met five times since 2014. The 7th session was held in Kathmandu in 2024. Nepal’s Foreign Minister Dr Arzu Rana Deuba paid an official visit to India from August 18–22, 2024, at the invitation of the Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
On a functional level, there are more than 40 bilateral mechanisms between Nepal and India covering the full range of cooperation. Discussions under these mechanisms are ongoing, particularly in key areas like connectivity—physical, digital, energy, and people-to-people ties.
Foreign ministry officials say steady progress has been made, especially through infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, integrated check posts, and petroleum pipelines.
Misri is also expected to hold political meetings, though it is unclear what form these will take. No detailed information has been released regarding the substance of his talks or meetings.
