KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said that the incoming government must address the demands of the Gen Z movement.
In her address to the nation on Thursday evening at the end of her six-month tenure as head of the interim government, she said the government successfully held the election but could not fulfill all the demands raised by the movement.
“With a six-month term, the government with a mandate to hold an election was not in a position to implement all the demands raised during the Gen Z movement. But we have certainly laid some foundations,” she said. “We encouraged investigative bodies dealing with serious crimes and corruption to work with full professional independence.”
According to Karki, the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) and the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police have moved forward with cases that had long remained suppressed. “The government has also taken historically tough action against irregularities such as contractors failing to complete projects and the non-payment of electricity bills,” she added.
Karki said a decision has already been made to make public the report of the investigation commission formed to probe incidents of force, vandalism, arson, and looting during the last September protests. “The incoming government will study the report in detail and take necessary steps based on its recommendations,” she added.
The outgoing PM also said she was confident that the new government, set to be formed under the leadership of youth, will deliver results in line with the demands and aspirations of the Gen Z movement—ending corruption, establishing good governance, creating jobs within the country, and advancing economic development and social justice.
