KATHMANDU: The government has lifted the ban on the import of motor vehicles, liquors and motorbikes.
The cabinet meeting held on Tuesday took the decision to this extent.
The decision, however, will come into implementation from December 15 only as the previous notice regarding import restrictions will remain in place till mid-December.
The government was under pressure to revisit the import restriction decisions as such restrictions were affecting its revenue mobilization.
Earlier on April 26, the government put a ban on the import of ‘luxury’ goods to slow down the depletion of foreign currency reserves due to skyrocketing imports.
It, however, had resumed imports of diamonds, television sets larger than 32 inches, toys, cards and snacks in August, citing Dashain festival, while continuing the ban on the import of motor vehicles, liquors, mobile phones costing more than $300 and motorbikes with a displacement of more than 150cc until mid-December.
