IG Khapung denies reports that he threatened to resign Nepal Police Headquarters

KATHMANDU: Inspector General of Nepal Police, Chandra Kuber Khapung, has clarified that there is no truth to claims that he threatened to resign if pressure is exerted to arrest former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak for the killings during the Gen Z protest on September 8 and 9.

Issuing a press statement on Friday, the Inspector General’s Secretariat said its serious attention has been drawn to misleading news reports suggesting that Inspector General Khapung had threatened to resign if pressure is exerted to arrest former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.

Some media reports had reported a few days ago that Inspector General Khapung threatened to resign if pressure is exerted on him to arrest former PM Oli and Home Minister Lekhak based on complaints filed by some groups since a judicial inquiry commission had been formed to look into incidents of September 8 and 9.

“It is hereby notified that the meetings held with the Prime Minister and the Home Minister were solely focused on recent incidents and the security challenges created by them to maintain peace and stability,” the Inspector General’s Secretariat said in the statement.
