KATHMANDU: Minister for Home Affairs Ramesh Lekhak has said that he would take a proposal to amend the Nepal Police Act, 2012, to Parliament within a month.
During his inspection of the Nepal Police Headquarters on Wednesday, Minister Lekhak said that amending the police law is the main priority of the ministry at the moment. “New laws need to be created, while some existing laws need amendments and revisions,” Lekhak said. “The police force is working with the Police Act made some 70 years ago. Some amendments were made in the past, but there are many issues that need clarity.”
Lekhak also said amendment to the Act is necessary to make the police force more systematic and effective.
“We drafted the Nepal Police Adjustment Act, 2019 to create provincial police units. But police adjustment has not been possible based on that act. Experts have called for some amendments to that Act as well,” Lekhak said. “There is also a need to review the operation, supervision, and coordination between Nepal Police and Provincial Police.”
