KATHMANDU: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has said that she has no ambition for any political post after having served in the nation’s highest office.
Speaking at a press conference in Kathmandu on Friday, Bhandari said she has already etched her name in history by reaching the top constitutional position and now seeks to dedicate herself to public service through her political party. “I have no desire, ambition or attachment to any position as I have already served as the President of the country.”
Bhandari organized the press meet after the Central Committee meeting of the CPN-UML on Tuesday decided that it would not be appropriate for the former Head of State to return back to politics. Terming the decision to bar her from the party as illegal, she warned that such impulsive actions could damage the party’s reputation. “Decisions made in haste and emotion will harm the credibility of the party,” she said.
UML Chairperson KP Sharma Oli has said in party meetings that Bhandari’s membership has not been renewed yet.
Bhandari, however, insisted that her party membership has already been renewed. “I renewed my party membership to re-engage in the politics of the CPN-UML,” she said, adding that her return should not be seen as surprising or controversial. “I was elected to the post of President as a political leader, and after completing that constitutional duty, I am returning to serve the country and the people through my party. This is not only my constitutional right but also a conscious decision to contribute to the nation’s political life.”
