KATHMANDU: Local authorities have officially fixed the prices of seven indigenous crops grown in Humla District to promote sustainable farming and food security,

The District Primary Purchase Committee has fixed the price of proso millet and quinoa at Rs 180 per kg each, beans at Rs 170 per kg, tartary buckwheat at Rs 100 per kg, sweet buckwheat at Rs 120 per kg, naked barley at Rs 120 per kg and finger millet at Rs 100 per kg.

The state-owned Food Management and Trading Company Limited will procure these crops in coordination with local governments, thereby ensuring that local farmers get fair prices for their produce.

Indigenous crops have gained popularity in recent years due to their environmental sustainability, nutritional benefits and role in improving food security. While many farmers across the country have shifted away from traditional crops due to low yields, remote hilly districts in Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces continue to preserve these age-old farming practices.

Improved road connectivity and local government support have now made it easier for farmers to access markets.
