KATHMANDU: The House of Representatives will elect the Speaker on April 5.
Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) General Secretary Kabindra Burlakoti said, after an all-party meeting organized by the Federal Parliament Secretariat on Wednesday, that the House will elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker on April 5.
As per the constitution, the House of Representatives must elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker within 15 days of the convening of its first meeting. The House held its first meeting on March 26, where newly elected lawmakers took the oath of office and secrecy.
RSP, which enjoys a near two-thirds majority in the lower house, has already decided to elect its Vice President, DP Arywal, as the Speaker.
Since the constitution requires the Deputy Speaker to be from the other party and the other gender, the Deputy Speaker must be a woman lawmaker from the other party.
RSP sources say the party is likely to support a candidate from the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) for the Deputy Speaker.
