House electing Deputy Speaker today

KATHMANDU: Members of House of Representatives are electing a new Deputy Speaker on Friday.

According to the Federal Parliament Secretariat, a meeting of the lower house will convene at 4 pm to elect the Deputy Speaker.

Rubi Kumari Thakur of Shram Sanskriti Party (SSP) and Saraswati Lama of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RRP) have filed their nominations for the position.

Thakur, who has the support of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) that enjoys a near two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives, is certain to be elected.

The lower house earlier this week unanimously elected RSP’s Dol Prasad Aryal as the new Speaker. Since the constitution requires Speaker and Deputy Speaker to be from different parties, RSP decided to back Thakur’s candidacy.

Meanwhile, President Ram Chandra Paudel is scheduled to address the joint sesion of the House of Representatives and the National Assembly later on Friday.
