House committee approves Bill to Amend Corruption Prevention Act

KATHMANDU: The State Affairs and Good Governance Committee of the House of Representatives on Thursday approved the Bill to Amend the Corruption Prevention Act.
During the meeting on Thursday, committee Chairperson Ram Hari Khatiwada tabled amendments in the Bill, which the committee approved unanimously.

Earlier, the house committee studied the report on the bill prepared by its sub-committee.

Former Prime Minsiter and CPN (Maoist Center) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal, and Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa, among others, also attended the meeting.

The Bill will now be tabled in the House of Representatives for approval.

Speaking at the meeting, Dahal reiterated his commitment to supporting the government in taking action against those involved in corruption. “During my tenure as Prime Minister, I made it clear that anyone found guilty of corruption, regardless of their status or affiliation, must face legal consequences. If leaders from my own party are implicated, they too must be investigated,” he said.

He also urged the government to investigate and reclaim Shera Durbar of Nuwakot, which has been registered in his former personal secretary’s name. “Just as we successfully reclaimed Lalita Niwas land, I will commend the government if it manages to recover Shera Durbar as well,” he added.

Likewise, NC General Secretary Thapa has demanded the formation of a special commission to investigate corruption cases. “We are tired of hearing repeated promises to start an investigation into corruption cases. Be it Shera Durbar, Lalita Niwas, or Giribandhu scams, let’s investigate all of them. No innocent person should be implicated, and no guilty individual should escape,” Thapa added.

He also said the investigation should cover everyone, including sitting and former Prime Ministers, as well as Members of Parliament.
