HoR elections necessitated by extraordinary circumstances: Bhandari

KATHMANDU: Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari has said that the upcoming House of Representatives election is not a routine periodic poll but an early election necessitated by extraordinary circumstances to safeguard the Constitution and restore political stability.

Addressing an orientation in Kathmandu on Monday, Bhandari said that although there were doubts over whether elections should be held, elections were the only option to protect the Constitution, bring the country back on track, build a dynamic society, and ensure good governance. “The EC began preparations with full commitment from the outset, focusing not on whether the election was possible but on how to successfully conduct it,” he added.

Bhandari said around 500,000 to 550,000 personnel would be mobilised during the election. “There is no reason to doubt security arrangements for the elections. Peace and security will be fully guaranteed,” he added.

Bhandari said the EC has identified constituencies as high-risk and medium-risk based on security assessments. “Such risks were assessed in past elections as well, but elections were held successfully,” he added.
