KATHMANDU: The government’s fiscal deficit climbed to Rs 218.57 billion in the ninth month of the fiscal year 2022/23.
According to data released by the Financial Comptroller General Office, the government has spent 52.57%, or Rs 943.05 billion, of the total budget of Rs 1793.83 billion allocated for the current fiscal year by mid-April. The government has spent 59.73%, or Rs 706 billion, out of the budget of Rs 1183.23 billion allocated for recurrent expenditure. It has managed to spend only 28.19%, or Rs 107.24 billion, out of the capital budget of Rs 380.38 billion allocated for the current fiscal year.
Similarly, the government has spent 56.05% of the total budget, or Rs 119.04 billion, allocated for financial management by mid-April. The government has allocated Rs 230.21 billion under the heading in the current fiscal year.
The government has been missing its revenue targets from the beginning of the current fiscal year. Over the first nine months of the current fiscal year, the government has managed to mobilize only Rs 724.47 billion in revenue. This is 49.67% of the revenue target that the government has set for the current fiscal year. The government has set a target of collecting Rs 1,458.60 billion in revenue in the current fiscal year.
Likewise, the government has also missed its target of foreign grants. The government has set a target of receiving Rs 55.45 billion in grants from different development partners in the fiscal year 2022/23. However, it has been able to receive only 8.66% of the target, or Rs 4.80 billion, so far.
