KATHMANDU: The government has said that it will study the feasibility of allowing the cultivation of marijuana for medicinal purposes.
Presenting the fiscal budget for 2023/24 in the joint meeting of the House of Representatives and the National Assembly on Monday, Minister for Finance Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat said the government will study the possibility of cultivating marijuana for medicinal purposes.
The government’s announcement has come at a time when activists are calling for the legalization of marijuana farming in Nepal.
Although marijuana farming is done in several parts of Nepal, security personnel arrest the crop and arrest the farmers as the marijuana farming is prevented by the law so far.
The medical marijuana market was valued at $13..8 billion in 2022. It is expected to expand to $65.9 billion in 2030, according to a study conducted by Grand View Research.
