KATHMANDU: The government is preparing to extend the term of two commissions related to transitional justice for the seventh time.
The Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led cabinet decided to extend the term of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappearance Persons (CIEDP) until mid-July, 2025, only July 11. The government used the authority to remove the difficulties as per Section 42 (1) of the Enforced Disappearances Enquiry, Truth and Reconciliation Commission Act, 2014.
However, the decision must be tabled in parliament within 30 days, as per Section 42 (2) of the Act.
Dahal was relieved of his position after failing the floor test in the House of Representatives on July 12. He was replaced by CPN-UML Chairperson KP Sharma Oli.
Government sources say Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Ajay Kumar Chaurasia, is preparing to present the government decision in parliament for approval on Monday.
The preparation to extend the term comes after political parties reached an agreement on four contentious points in the Bill for the Amendment of the Investigation of Enforced Disappeared Persons, Truth and Reconciliation Commission Act.
The two commissions were established to investigate human rights violations committed by both state and rebel forces during the decade-long armed conflict. The Comprehensive Peace Accord (CPA) had envisaged forming these two commissions to deliver justice to the conflict-affected people.
