
KATHMANDU: Nepal has provided 27 tons of relief materials to the Myanmar government to assist citizens affected by the March 28 earthquake.
A Nepali delegation led by Joint Secretary Tapas Adhikari, who heads the Southeast Asia Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, handed over the supplies to Myanmar government officials at the Yangon International Airport on Thursday.
The relief materials include food items, daily essentials, medicines and medical equipment.
The Nepali delegation also paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the earthquake and expressed deep condolences to the Myanmar government and its people. “The earthquake has caused significant damage in Myanmar. In this situation, the Nepal government and private sector have provided 27 tons of relief materials to the Myanmar government,” Adhikari told the RSS news agency. “The Nepal government will continue its support in the future, and such exchanges will further strengthen the friendship between our two countries.”
The earthquake has claimed over 5,350 lives in Myanmar, while hundreds more are reported missing. Eighteen Nepali-speaking Myanmarese have died in the earthquake.
Myanmar government representative Heyu Wai Luwin thanked the Nepal government for the assistance and provided a brief overview of the human and material losses caused by the earthquake.
A medical team of the Nepal Army is currently in Myanmar, providing services in the quake-hit region. The team has treated over 1,300 people and successfully performed surgeries on eight critically injured individuals, according to the Embassy of Nepal in Myanmar.
