Govt presenting budget for fiscal year 2025/26 today

KATHMANDU: The government is unveiling the budget for the fiscal year 2025/26 on Wednesday.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel will present the annual estimates of revenue and expenditure in a joint session of Parliament at 3 pm. The Federal Parliament Secretariat has requested all members of both houses to be present in the House of Representatives by 2:45 pm.

The new fiscal year begins in mid-July.

Before the joint session, the House of Representatives will convene at 1:30 pm, where Minister Paudel will table the Economic Survey for 2025/26.

The National Planning Commission (NPC) has set a budget ceiling of Rs 1,900 billion for the upcoming fiscal year. However, officials from the finance ministry say the final budget is expected to exceed this limit.

For the current fiscal year, the government initially proposed a budget of Rs 1,860.3 billion, which was later revised down to Rs 1,692.73 billion in the mid-term review.

As of Wednesday, with a month and a half remaining in the fiscal year, the government has spent only Rs 1,229.38 billion—66.08% of the original allocation.
