KATHMANDU: The Department of Transport Management has paved the legal way for the registration of motor vehicles produced or assembled in Nepal.
The Department of Transportation Management Thursday said that it has amended the Transport Management Work Procedure Guidelines, 2003 to enable the registration of vehicles manufactured or assembled locally. Previously, customs declaration was mandatory for the registration of motor vehicles in Nepal. The provision was causing hindrances to the registration of ‘Yatri’ – a homegrown EV two-wheeler brand – as the company was unable to provide customs declaration documents as required by the law.
Earlier, this week there were news reports of ‘Yatri’ ceasing production due to the government’s lack of support and regressive policies. People took to social media to criticize the government for discouraging innovation. This prompted Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal to instruct the department to take necessary measures for the registration of motor vehicles produced or assembled in Nepal.
Under the new amendment, companies manufacturing or assembling motor vehicles in Nepal can produce VAT invoices instead of customs declaration forms for registration purposes.
