KATHMANDU: Representatives of the Gen Z–led people’s movement and the Government of Nepal signed an agreement in Kathmandu on Wednesday evening.
Prime Minister Sushila Karki and Bhoj Bikram Thapa, a member of a martyr’s family representing Gen Z, signed the agreement at the Office of the Prime Minister in Singha Durbar.
The agreement states that a permanent commission will be formed to promote integrity and good governance and to prevent corruption. Similarly, the two sides agreed to form an investigation commission to probe excessive use of force and extrajudicial killings and recommend criminal action against those found guilty. Similarly, the agreement states that no criminal cases will be filed against protesters merely for participating in political activities.
Likewise, it has been agreed that institutions, funds, and trusts registered in the names of political parties and leaders will be investigated and any illegally acquired property will be nationalized. It also provides for the formation of a high-level commission to draft constitutional amendments to strengthen good governance, inclusivity, and meet public aspirations.
After signing the agreement, Prime Minister Karki said the agreement with Gen Z now becomes part of the government and will be implemented.
She said the understanding reached between the two sides will guide the changes to come in the days ahead.
The agreement states that the tenure of the head of state, the executive heads of all three tiers of government, and members of the Council of Ministers will be limited to two full terms. It also sets the minimum age for candidates for the House of Representatives, provincial assemblies, and local government positions at 21 years.
