Govt forms judicial panel to probe Gen Z protest that left 74 dead

KATHMANDU: The government has formed a judicial investigation commission to probe the Gen Z protest under the chairmanship of former Special Court Chairperson Gauri Bahadur Karki.

A cabinet meeting held on Sunday took the decision, according to Minister for Home Affairs Om Prakash Aryal.

Former AIG of Nepal Police Bigyan Raj Sharma and Legal Expert Bishweshwar Prasad Bhandari are the other members of the three-member commission.

The commission has been given three months to conduct a study and submit its report.

As many as 74 people lost their lives, while hundreds of government offices, business establishments and private residences were torched and vandalized after the Gen Z protest turned violent on September 8 and 9. Police have been accused of using excessive force to contain the protest.

The first meeting of the interim cabinet, led by Sushila Karki, held on September 15, had decided in principle to form a judicial investigation commission to probe the incident.
